How Can 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' Make Shopping Easier?

Updated: Nov 20

I want to tell you about the little game I like to play that immediately transformed my style for the better. I remember exactly when and where I came up with this simple outfit trick and now teach it to every one of my clients –because it’s easy, fun, and works.

If you really grasp what I’m about to tell you… I think this trick will stay with you forever as well.

Let’s get into it.

Why Finding Pieces That Fit and Flatter Feels Impossible

If you hate shopping, it’s probably for 1 of two reasons…

  1. You either leave with pieces you think you like, but then wind up barely wearing them, if at all.

  2. Or you leave empty-handed after a 2-hour, painful experience of indecision and overthinking.

Maybe something super cute catches your eye…but it doesn’t fit right when you try it on.

Or you try on something super comfortable, but it’s boring, or just not the vibe you want.

(yes, 10-thousandth pair of leggings and athleisure, we’re looking at you).

ORR… maybe the fit is amazing, but the color completely washes you out or makes you look 'tired.'

But on the other hand, when you find that one piece that hits just right on every level –OHHH YEA.

You should buy a lottery ticket because that’s almost NEVER. But why?

Because you trying to “shop your way to better style” by hunting for these ‘golden egg finds’ aimlessly is what makes shopping is so frustrating...

That's exactly why I created this little trick.

Rock-Paper-Scissors… But for Style

I call it “Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo,” and you can apply it to every piece you try on.

It’s an easy clothes-shopping game that tells you exactly if a piece is ‘Golden Egg,’ or if it will collect dust in your closet in a week.

“Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo” boils down to three pillars of style that each represent a “move.”

Just like in Rock-Paper-Scissors, each “move” (Rock, Paper, and Scissors) is “stronger” than the next.

Each of the three pillars has a unique impact on your style, but the trick works because they’re prioritized in a specific order.

Here’s what each one stands for:

Rock – Fit

Fit is the foundation of style. Well-fitted clothes look polished, create a more flattering silhouette, and help you feel comfortable and confident. When a piece fits well, it makes a much better impression than any trend or color could alone.

For example, imagine a classic blazer that fits you perfectly at the shoulders and waist; it will instantly upgrade your look, whether it’s trendy or not.

Even when your vibe is oversized, there is a difference between honoring your proportions and drowning your shape. This is difference that you can both see and feel.

Fit always takes priority because it affects your comfort, the silhouette, and how your body looks. If a piece doesn’t fit well, you’ll hate every second of wearing it, no matter how trendy or cute a piece is. In Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo, Rock (fit) beats Trend (Scissors) because nothing pulls an outfit together quite like great fit.

Paper – Color

Color is the finishing touch that not only brings out your personal style, bust also your complexion, making you look younger. If the color doesn’t complement your skin tone, even the best-fitting piece won’t feel or look quite right. However, when a color does suit you, it adds an extra boost of confidence to your whole look.

For instance, if you’re debating between two t-shirts that both fit great but one color makes your face look fresh and energized, choose the one with the color that flatters you best.

The right color can make you look radiant, while the wrong one can make you look tired or washed out. But if fit or trend is missing, color can’t fix an outfit.

Therefore, the rock-paper-scissors loop continues.

Scissors – Trend

Trends, aka what’s “in” right now, are fun to wear and keep your wardrobe feeling fresh, and they reflect the time we’re living in, letting you show off some personal style.

While trends are exciting, they shouldn’t come before fit. Think of it like this: if you’re trying on a trendy oversized sweater that swallows you up or doesn’t look flattering, the trend factor isn’t enough to make it worth buying.

Instead, look for trends that work with your proportions and flatter your body.

How to Simplify Shopping & Dressing With Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo

Now that you understand each style pillar’s importance, let’s see how to apply the Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo trick to make shopping and dressing easier:

1. Check for Fit over Trendiness.

As soon as you try on a piece, focus on the fit first. If it doesn’t fit well or isn’t flattering, it goes in the “needs alterations” pile, or get’s put back on the rack with no question.

2. If it fits, then you can ask “Will this add to my wardrobe?”

If the fit passes your check, ask yourself. Does this item add something fresh to your wardrobe? Or is it classic enough to stand the test of time?

For instance, a high-waisted pair of jeans might be both trendy and flattering. This balance helps you stay on-trend without sacrificing how the clothes fit.

3. If it’s Cute and Flattering, look at color.

Lastly, ask yourself if the color works for you. Does it make your skin tone look lively, or does it wash you out? Try to focus on colors that give you a natural glow.

For example, if you’re trying on a sweater that fits well and is trendy but isn’t in a color that flatters you, think twice before committing.

Putting it to the Test

Next time you shop, try playing this game! With practice, you’ll find that you’re making quicker, better choices. And, instead of overthinking every detail, you’ll know exactly what pieces to invest in and which ones to leave behind.

Play around with Fashion Ro-Sham-Bo in your wardrobe too. You might even discover some hidden gems that you’d forgotten about – all because they pass the fit, trend, and color test!

With this trick in your back pocket, I hope you can enjoy shopping and dressing with a lot less stress and a lot more fun.

Happy shopping!
