Deckkkk your closet with winter outfits, fa-la-la-la-la!
The cold days are here, along with holiday cheer. –This is one of my favorite times of year. Okay that was the last rhyme (lol).
It is one of my favorite seasons though. Winter outfits mean double layers… aka, double opportunities to look super stylish.
But most women don’t know how to approach winter style, so they make a crucial mistake, and waste tons of mental energy (and moolah) as a result.
So before that end-of-the-year rush, let’s talk about what that mistake is, and the 6 pieces to invest in to stay warm, polished, and fashionable this winter.
The Number 1 Winter Wardrobe Mistake
When winter rolls around, many people resort to stocking up on cheap, trendy items.
The idea is: More “cheap” items mean you can try out different styles, stay on top of trends, and keep your wardrobe fresh – More “Bang for your buck.”
Seems logical, right?
Well, yes. It does seem logical. And that’s why most of my clients have this habit before coming to me. But it’s a huge mistake, and almost nobody realizes this.
Not only does this cost you more in the long run, but it also drains your mental energy. Here’s why…
Why Cheap Clothes Actually Cost More
Since the eruption of brands like Shein, fast fashion is practically the new norm. We see a cheaper price tag and instantly think less money.
But don’t fall into the trap.
Grabbing cheap winter clothes may save a few bucks upfront, but it creates a cycle of overspending and underwhelming results.
Low-quality pieces rarely stand the test of time. They tend to lose their shape, fade, or fall apart after a few washes, meaning you usually have to replace them frequently.
“But Sheanneen, I have a piece I love that was super cheap!”...
I don’t mean cheap pieces CAN’T last. They just usually don’t. And how many pieces do you go through to find a piece you actually wear? Probably a lot.
Plus, most sites scream bold colors, designs, and prints. That's why everything is so alluring.
Statement pieces are great, yea, but they're the bullies of your closet playground. They can make friends (mix with other outfits), but not with most, and not for long.
That’s why most women spend hundreds of dollars (sometimes thousands) on clothes each year, and only ever wear 20%.
Not to say you can’t get quality pieces for cheap, but more on that in a few minutes. First, how do higher-quality pieces serve you better?
Quality Is Cheaper (and better) than Quantity
If you’re a red-blooded human, you’ve probably heard the phrase “Quality over quantity.”
The fashion industry makes us forget this by shoving endless new trends down our throats. So we buy more clothes than we could ever wear.
But the truth is, investing in fewer, high-quality items is one of the best fashion choices you could make. For 2 reasons:
1) You make smarter shopping decisions and fewer impulse buys. Thereby saving money, and getting a better footing on your financials.
2) Your pieces are more comfortable, and stand the test of time. Aka less “cost-per-wear.” Here’s what I mean…
Saving Money By Lowering Your “Cost-Per-Wear”
This means how much you wear a piece compared to how much you pay for it.
Let’s say you pay $100 for 3 cheap sweaters and only wear each of them once. You paid around $33 every time you wore those sweaters before barely touching them.
Now let’s say you pay $150 for one quality sweater and wear that 10 times this winter.
Your cost-per-wear is $16. You spent HALF YOUR MONEY in the long run by making a considered, quality purchase.
Want the best of both worlds?
Here is one of the biggest “hacks” I like to tell clients…
Go thrifting and hit up vintage stores!! Thrift stores often have tons of high-quality items at a discount. You’d be surprised how many gems you can find that LAST.
Nonetheless, whether you go thrifting, or buy pieces directly from higher-end brands, remember: Quality ALWAYS trumps quantity when it comes to style.
But which quality pieces should you invest in this winter? Here are my top tips…
6 Ways To Massively Upgrade Your Winter Wardrobe
1. Statement Coats
A well-fitted coat like a tailored wool coat or a cinched-waist puffer jacket will keep you warm and polished.
Stick to neutral colors like camel, black, or gray for versatility, or go bold with vibrant hues or chic patterns for personality.
2. Insulating Materials
Opt for cashmere, wool, or fleece-lined fabrics that keep you cozy without adding bulk. These materials are perfect for creating warm yet breathable outfits.
3. Textures and Accents
Pair smooth fabrics with cozy textures like cable-knit sweaters or leather pants to add depth.
Look for faux fur or shearling accents on collars, cuffs, or linings to elevate your look with a touch of luxury.
4. Footwear That’s Functional and Stylish
Choose knee-high or chic ankle boots with insulation to keep your feet warm. Stick to versatile shades like black or brown, or go bold with unique designs to make a statement.
5. Accessorize Strategically
Scarves, gloves, and hats in cashmere or wool aren’t just for warmth—they pull your whole outfit together. Match or complement colors for a cohesive look.
6. Layer Like a Pro
Avoid bulk by layering with sleek thermals or turtlenecks. Merino wool is especially great—it’s temperature-regulating, breathable, and perfect for staying chic while keeping warm.
Investing in these 6 quality winter wear should get you started on the right path for flawless style this season.
